LETTERBOXD
Context Matters

THE PROBLEMThe shift from theaters to handheld screens dilutes cinema’s impact and conversation surrounding it. Without proper viewing context, the fundamental value and emotional weight of film are lost.

THE INSIGHTPeople don’t just remember the movies they love, they remember where they saw them.

THE IDEAA classic can work anywhere, but the theater makes it unfortgettable. Where a film is seen fundamentally shapes opinion. Letterboxd will champion the cinema experience, prompting users to document the theatrical experience as much as the movie itself.

The Hero Film:
Low rated reviews of critcally acclaimed films play against the visceral scale of cinema. The movie doesn’t change. The experience does.

The Poster Series
High-contrast atmospheric posters for Heat, La La Land, and Tenet. Capturing what's lost between a living room and a theatre. The grain of 35mm. The pressure of 100db sound in an IMAX theatre.

The “Seen In Theater” Feature A new logging tag that lets users verify their viewing context. Turning a trip to the cinema into a social badge and a permanent part of their diary.

I have personally strong feelings about this topic and wanted to talk about it a bit more.
